Visiting Howarth

Penistone Hill Country Park

Penistone Hill Country Park offers a scenic escape near the village of Haworth, West Yorkshire. This open moorland park is steeped in history, marked by the presence of three abandoned quarries. Nicknamed Dimples, Penistone, and West End, these quarries were once bustling hubs for extracting sandstone. The extracted rock played a vital role in shaping the local landscape, providing materials for houses, roads, and even reservoir networks. The industrial activity finally ceased in the late 1960s, leaving behind a unique and rugged terrain perfect for exploring.

Penistone Hill Country Park offers a chance to immerse yourself in the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales. Walks around the park weave through heather moorland, offering stunning panoramic views. The area caters to a variety of abilities, with options for mountain biking, dog walking and leisurely short strolls. With care, the boulders scattered around the park can be a fun spot for supervised rock climbing by children. To delve deeper into the park’s rich history and geology, there’s also a heritage trail that winds its way through the landscape.

It has small car parks at its outer edges and a larger car park at its top. All offer free parking and are ideal for those going on to explore Haworth Moor.
